House made of shipping containers planned for Buffalo's First Ward

In what is the first for the region, and perhaps New York state, a Buffalo couple plan to construct a home made from six shipping containers.

That’s correct — six 40-foot-long uniquely stacked shipping containers.

The Buffalo Planning Board approved a development proposal for the house, set for 31 Vandalia St. Construction will start this summer.

“I don’t think we’d be proposing a project like this on street like Norwalk,” admitted architect Brad Wales, who designed the house planned for the city's First Ward for Tim and Emily Lowrey.

When completed, it may be considered the most unique, from an architectural perspective, private residence in Buffalo.

Self-described architecture and history buffs, the Lowreys specifically targeted the vacant Vandalia Street parcel because of its industrial past.

“I love the feeling of the First Ward,” Tim Lowrey said. “What we are doing is almost an homage to the grain elevators.”

The 2,500-square-foot, three-bedroom house has several “green” elements featured including the possibility of having the entire residence be solar-powered. Lowrey said he would love to buy the panels from SolarCity Corp. once the massive RiverBend plant is completed next year.

The containers were bought from a New Jersey logistics firm and are currently being stored in Corfu.
